Make Your Passion Your Day Job and Transform Your Life
How I Found New Energy, New Passions, and a New Day Job
“Don’t quit your day job.”
“Don’t quit your daydream.”
We hear these phrases a lot but I wonder… can we have both our day job and our daydream? I quit my day job and followed my daydream right to this website. But then I found a day job that could be part of my daydream. You following?
Let me explain. At the beginning of this year I decided it was time for a change. I was no longer able to balance the life I wanted with what my job demanded of me. And my heart was no longer in it. I was burnt out and needed a break. So I took one. I gave myself four months to relax, reflect, and determine what I wanted to do, to be next.
And then I found something I didn’t fully realize had been missing: energy. Energy to create, to engage, to contribute to something bigger than myself. That’s when I knew I was ready. So, in August, I started to look for the next step in my career. Thanks to the time I spent reflecting I knew my criteria. The job needed to:
- Give me the opportunity to affect company culture and promote wellbeing in the workplace (aka all the things I talk about on Britt et al.).
- Offer the potential to grow and develop my skillset while also trusting me to lead and make decisions.
- Allow me to focus on one brand and mission.
- Be a step up professionally and pay me accordingly.
- Offer me more balance and more control over my schedule.
So I was picky. I only applied to jobs that I would actually want to do. And I passed on jobs that would offer less pay or less responsibility. But I worked hard at it. I applied to over a dozen jobs. I put hours into each resume, cover letter, and application. I showed my value so they would see it too. I had conversations with people in my business sphere to ask for advice and introductions.
A Dream Day Job: Employee Communications Manager
It was a lot of work. But it was worth it because this week I started a new job! And it is exactly what I was looking for when I left agency life to find the next step on my career path.
- I get to manage employee communications and help a global company effectively engage with a diverse group of employees.
- I will work side-by-side with HR and executive leaders that inspire me, teach me, and trust me.
- I am finally going to dive deep into one brand and mission where I know I can make a measurable and significant impact.
- The job is fully remote and (thanks to all the trust) I know that, as long as I’m getting my work done, I can create space for myself and set boundaries between my work and my life.
I deeply believe in empowering employees to advocate on their own behalf and I am passionate about and energized by all things related to workplace satisfaction. And now, the same interests that inspired me to start Britt et al. get to be part of my day job. Talk about fully living out your daydream! And this means I’ll have even more insights and advice to pass onto you.
